Building a sleeper: stock-looking hot rod, modern LS power

The best sleepers give nothing away from the driver's seat. Here's where LS swaps usually blow the cover, and how to keep it.

Short answer

A sleeper looks stock and drives modern. With an LS swap, the giveaways are usually an aftermarket speedometer, a moved shifter and a cut-up tunnel. Keep the factory gauge with a mechanical speedometer drive on the 4L60E or 4L80E, keep the shifter where the car's linkage expects it, and choose a transmission that fits the tunnel.

What is a sleeper car?

A sleeper is a car that looks slower than it is: original-looking body, original-looking interior, and far more engine than anyone expects. An LS with an electronic overdrive is the modern way to build one, because you get fuel injection, overdrive cruising and a deep parts supply, all from a package that fits a lot of older engine bays.

Where does an LS swap usually give itself away?

  • The speedometer. The 4L60E and 4L80E have no cable drive, so the usual fix is an aftermarket electronic gauge. That's the first thing a passenger notices.
  • The shifter. A different transmission can move the shifter away from where the factory linkage sits.
  • The tunnel. A bigger case can mean cutting and patching the floor.
  • The engine bay. Open the hood and the cover is blown anyway. Make that the one place you show it off.

How do I keep the original dash and speedometer?

Put a mechanical drive back on the transmission. Our kits add a drive gear to the output shaft so the original cable threads on and the factory gauge reads road speed, while the VSS keeps feeding the computer. Original cluster, original needle, and nothing on the dash gives the swap away. The full explanation is in how to keep your mechanical speedometer with an LS swap.

How do I keep the shifter in the stock location?

Our 4L60E / 4L65E / 4L70E tail housing kit gives the transmission a factory mechanical speedometer take-off while keeping the shifter where the original transmission put it. For heavier builds, the 4L80E tail housing kit puts the mechanical hook-up at the factory angle with no interference with the stock electrical configuration.

Which transmission keeps the floor uncut?

Usually the smaller one. The 4L60E family is the more compact case. The 4L80E is longer and heavier, and its mount sits in a different place, so plan the crossmember and tunnel clearance before you commit. If your LS makes near-stock power, the 4L60E family is often enough. If not, budget for the 4L80E's extra size. See 4L60E vs 4L80E for the numbers.

What about under the hood?

That's where a sleeper earns the reveal. A clean engine bay with a carbon fiber cover tells anyone who lifts the hood that this wasn't an accident. Our LS 1pc Carbon Fiber Engine Cover ($1,450) is aircraft-grade carbon, resin infused in house, comes with mounting hardware, and fits any LS except the supercharged LS9. If you want the shape without the weave, the gelcoat-finish cover ($599) comes from the same mould in gloss black, or matched to your body color on request.

What's the sleeper LS swap checklist?

  1. Pick the engine and transmission by torque and fit, using our LS pairing guide.
  2. Choose a controller that runs the electronic transmission.
  3. Order a mechanical speedometer kit or tail housing for your transmission, with gears cut to your tire and rear gear (calculator).
  4. Measure the crossmember location and driveshaft length with everything in final position.
  5. Dress the engine bay the way you want it seen.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a car a sleeper?

A sleeper looks stock or slower than it is, with an original-looking body and interior, but has far more performance than it shows. With an LS swap, keeping the factory dash, speedometer and shifter location is what keeps the secret.

Can I keep my original speedometer with an LS swap?

Yes. A mechanical speedometer drive kit or machined tail housing on the 4L60E or 4L80E lets the factory cable-driven gauge read road speed while the VSS still feeds the computer.

Will an LS swap move my shifter?

It can. Southwest Fabrication's 4L60E-family tail housing kit keeps the shifter where the original transmission put it, so the car's factory linkage still lines up.

Does the carbon fiber LS cover fit every LS engine?

The LS 1pc Carbon Fiber Engine Cover fits every LS engine except the supercharged LS9.
